WeChat, China’s biggest social media platform, is now more powerful than Apple Pay, a new study shows.
In a report published Tuesday, research firm iResearch said that Apple Pay has overtaken WeChat in China.
WeChat users spend 2.7% of their mobile phone time on WeChat.
Apple Pay has made its way to the United States, but its popularity is not as high as it is in China, where the payments service is only available to a small group of people.
In addition, Apple Pay is limited to mobile phones, which means it is far less likely to be used by people in high-end cities like Beijing.iResearch analyst James W. O’Donnell said in a blog post that while WeChat may have a relatively small user base, it still commands a premium.
The data shows Apple Pay in China has overtook WeChat as the most used payment system in the country, with more than 10% of iPhone users using it.
Apple is still the top payment app in China with more customers using Apple Pay than any other platform, but Apple Pay will likely struggle to make up for the losses in Apple Pay’s base in China that is far larger than the total number of people using ApplePay in the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, according to the research firm.
