WeChat, the popular messaging app owned by WeChat Group, may have to give up the Android app that it has used for almost a year.
The Chinese messaging app is one of the top five most popular mobile messaging apps in China.
WeChat said Thursday that it would begin working with a developer to create a standalone Android app, which would allow users to keep their WeChat accounts on the platform without having to switch between platforms.
The company also said that it is working on “a standalone Android application that will enable users to maintain their Wechat accounts on Android without having any additional software on their phones.”
The announcement comes after WeChat CEO Jia Yueting said last month that the company was developing an Android application.
Wechat did not provide a timeline for when the new application would be released.
